Berberis evergreen hedging (Berberis stenophylla)

Berberis stenophyll is a tough, very prickly evergreen variety of the huge Berberis family.

The stems arch gracefully and are absolutely covered in fragranced orange/yellow flowers in spring and there can sometimes be a second flush in autumn. It's very prickly with spines on the ends of its narrow leaves and on the stems - and it's a multistemmed plant so it's really good at forming a bushy hedge so it's excellent for intruder proof hedging. The berries (barberries) turn from green in summer to blue/purple by autumn and are edible (but bitter!).

It is shade tolerant though it will produce more flowers and berries if grown in a sunny spot. It is fine on most soils providing they are well drained - and is suitable for coastal situations.
