In this section, we show 3 products that we strongly recommend - RootGrow, Bone Meal Root Builder from Westland, and Seaweed Bio-Stimulant. All of these products can be used individually or you can use any two or all three of them - all depending on your budget. We also show a usage chart to help you decide how much of each product to order depending on which type of plants you are buying and the quantity of plants you are using.

Bone Meal
Bone Meal Root Builder by Westland is an organic granular plant food which encourages healthy root growth - ideally used when planting but you can also use it to give a hedge an annual feed - all hedging needs to be fed once a year. See the usage chart at the bottom of this page for the amount needed.
Please select either the option for cell grown/P7/P9's or the option for pots/bare roots/root balls - we despatch from two sites so it helps us tie up the Bone Meal order with the plant order to deliver them all at once. If your order is mixed (eg some cell grown and some pot grown) you can select either option.

RootGrow
RootGrow is the only planting aid to carry the Royal Horticultural Society mark of approval and is the only product that will support your plants for their entire lifetime.
For better establishment, naturally healthier plants, stronger flowering and fruiting, better drought resistance RootGrow is all you need. Unlike a fertiliser which loses it's potency over time, RootGrow (which comprises of UK origin Mycorrhizal fungi (friendly fungi) will develop into a huge secondary root system increasing the root area of your plants by up to 700 times.
Shortly after planting, the fungi in RootGrow will begin to colonise the plant roots, extending into the surrounding soil via an extensive network of fungal filaments. Up to 20m of these filaments can be found in an area of soil the size of a sugar cube! These fungi have evolved to help plants find essential nutrients, minerals and moisture and pass them back to the plant in exchange for carbon.
RootGrow is endorsed by RHS gardeners (recommended in RHS planting guidelines) and used regularly on BBC Gardeners' World.

Insert the quantity you need (see the usage chart at the bottom of this page). It is sensible to order more than you need if you have other planting to do within the 12 months shelf life. The 150g, 360g and 1kg packs are re-sealable and the 2.5 litre tub has a re-sealable lid.

RootGrow Usage Levels
The usage levels shown in the chart below are approximate, particularly for bare root and root ball plants, because the root size varies by species and indeed can vary from year to year. Please feel free to phone us for advice on usage levels if required.
It is an expensive product so whilst we are showing the recommended usage levels in the chart, in practise you can use a bit less than recommended - using more does not increase the benefits. |

Seaweed Bio-Stimulant
This is a terrific product for all newly planted hedging, particularly bare root and root ball hedging. It is a fertiliser, proven effective in trials, which improves root development through the leaves rather than directly via the roots.
All you do is dilute it in a watering can and water it onto the new foliage emerging in late spring and early summer to ensure excellent establishment and root development. If you have too long a stretch of hedging to carry a watering can back and forward to the hedge we suggest you take a hose to the hedge and use the hose to re-fill the watering can containing the appropriate dosage of seaweed bio-stimulant.
If RootGrow is beyond your budget, then this seaweed bio-stimulant is a useful alternative - not as effective as RootGrow but better than nothing.
