Pot grown and cell grown plants are available year round and make a great option when planting a hedge. Pots come in various sizes, as do the plants grown in them, and can be planted when convenient for you. These plants will be happy in their pots, given enough water, until you’re ready to plant. Cell Grown plants are usually small, 10-30cm and a great step between Pots and Bare Roots.

Bare root hedging plants are extremely popular. They are delivered and should be planted during the dormant season (usually November to April) and can be pre ordered from mid-summer. We recommend pre-ordering where possible to reserve your plants but take new orders right the way through the season. Bare roots are a cost effective way of planting a new hedge.

Root balls are generally available from October through to April/May, though some species are available year round. The plants are field grown and then lifted with a ‘ball’ of soil around the roots that is secured with hessian and sometimes wire. Root balls are often very impressive plants that can be pre ordered from mid-summer.

Gorse boasts golden yellow flowers from spring, right through to the winter. The green foliage makes a great screen and the sharp spines a useful intruder deterrent. The yellow, scented flowers are attractive to wildlife such as bees as they provide such a long season of nectar.

Uses

This evergreen makes a good privacy screen, wind break and noise barrier. Gorse is also a wonderful intruder proof hedge, as it is dense in growth and fearfully spikey. It looks at home in natural settings such as informal garden hedging and provides year round interest to wildlife and humans alike.

Combine with

Either grow alone to form a dense hedge or with other native hedging plants for a native mix.

Growth

Ulex Europaeus has an average growth rate of approximately 20-40cm pa. Gorse is best for dense hedging of up to 3m.

Care

Gorse is best pruned after flowering. Please view the Best4Hedging Care and Planting instructions in our Advice section.
