Blackthorn Hedge Plants, also known by their Latin name Prunus spinosa, produce pure white flowers against dark stems in early spring, followed by attractive mid-green foliage, and finally, sloes appearing in the autumn. Often devoured by birds, these sloes can be collected and used to make Sloe Gin, or when left to adorn the branches, they provide wonderful seasonal interest. Prunus spinosa hedge plants are covered in thorns and are popular in native mixes.

Blackthorn hedging (Prunus spinosa hedge plants) description

The showy white flowers of Blackthorn provide a welcome burst of brightness against the bare branches of these hedge plants in early spring and attract a variety of wildlife, particularly bees and birds. Small, black sloes appear in autumn and stand out against the decorative ovate leaves. Blackthorn is native to the UK and provides a dense, bushy feature shrub with thorny branches that are great for adding texture to your garden.

Best uses for Blackthorn hedging

Blackthorn hedging is easy to grow, tolerant of most soil types and well suited to a moist, free-draining position in full sun. Prunus spinosa hedge plants are popularly used as a base in mixed native hedging as they provide wildlife interest and work wonderfully when used to create a cottage garden/informal look. Prunus spinosa has thorny stems and can make a good intruder deterrent hedge, whilst being able to handle coastal situations due to its hardy nature.

Combine Blackthorn with

Prunus spinosa hedge plants can be grown alone for a uniform look or combined with other native plants to create a diverse garden feature, see our mixed hedging packs for readymade bundles.

Growth rate of Prunus spinosa hedge plants

Blackthorn hedging is fast growing and able to achieve about 40-60cms of growth each year. Prunus spinosa is best suited to hedges with a height between 1-4 metres.

The plants were good but arrived with one of the two having been emptied out of its pot and it would suggest that more restraining packaging was required.

On 04-Oct-2016 the supplier responded:
Thanks for taking the time to provide your feedback and I'm sorry to hear there was some confusion with regard to your order. Having looked at the details of your ordering I can see that you asked for two-to-three foot plants but as all of our sizing is in centimetres, when my colleague has processed your order he has miscalculated the conversion, hence the mix-up.

We're obviously very sorry about this and in light of the confusion have refunded you in full.

If there is anything else at all with which we can help.

On 27-Jul-2016 the supplier responded:
Product :Thanks for taking the time to provide your feedback and I'm sorry to hear that you are not completely satisfied with one of the plants we have sent.

Deciduous, native species do, when in transit, drop their leaves if their boxes are handled a little too roughly and it sounds like this may have been the case. I would like to assure you that we will full underwrite the health of the plants over the coming growing season so if there are any problems with them at all please do not hesitate to contact us again using the details below and we will help out however we can.
