How to tidy your lawn edges
21 January 2015

As this time of year is not the most suitable time to lay new turf, the best thing you can do to make sure your lawn still looks as healthy and neat as possible, is to keep your lawn edges tidy. With a little bit of extra maintenance after mowing, your lawn can be the envy of all your neighbours and give your garden that well-cared for, professional look.

General Tidying

  • First you need to select your tools. Some mowers will trim this hard to reach part of your lawn but, if not, you can use edging shears or a rotary trimmer after mowing. Both of these tools will give you the same result, but using an electric trimmer is often a better option when tackling larger areas.
  • Then, simply cut back any overhanging grass that is spreading into surrounding borders.
  • It is a good idea to do this every time you mow, as this final touch will accentuate the shape of your lawn and the lines of your beds and borders.

Fixing Broken Edges

  • Sometimes the edges of your lawn can become damaged, but there is an easy solution to get your lawn back to its best.
  • With a sharp spade, cut into the damaged turf, creating a small square or rectangle shape, then undercut this and remove. Next, rotate the edge 180°, ensuring the damaged edge is now facing inwards, and an undamaged part of your turf has become the new outer edge.
  • Level this section and press down firmly, then fill with compost, re-seed and water. There are specific products, such as lawn feed, you can also use to encourage re-growth and repair.

Creating a Lawn Edge

  • You may find that even with constant edging and trimming, some parts of your lawn are still overhanging and growing into your borders. If this is the case, there is a more permanent way to tackle this.
  • You can create a physical lawn edge choosing from a variety of materials such as iron, brick or plastic – these can often be found ready-made at your local garden centre. You simply push them down along the edges of your lawn to prevent overgrowth.

If you are thinking of laying new turf completely, roll on lawn turf is one of the best options to go for. Autumn is considered the optimum time to do this as the soil is warm and moist, which will encourage turf to establish quickly. You can also lay turf during spring and summer, however it’s important to remember that during these seasons there can often be dry spells, so frequent watering is essential.
