Dwarf/Compact Box or Buxus sempervirens 'Suffruticosa' is a compact version of best4hedging's Common Box. Ideal for very low-growing, garden edging, Compact Box has small, dark green leaves, with a dense and bushy habit. This is a very slow-growing evergreen so Buxus sempervirens 'Suffruticosa' retains its shape well for a smart formal shape.

  • Best Features: Evergreen foliage, slow-growing, very compact
  • Ideal For Hedges: Less than 1m high, path edging, parterres, knot gardens
  • Growth Rate: Very slow | approx 10cm a year
  • Position: Any normal soil including well-drained, partial or full shade, exposed or sheltered, inland and coastal
  • Also Consider: Our other Box hedging varieties for slightly taller but still slow-growing plants and attractive feature plants.

*Please note, 1 bare root = 1 Compact Box plant, not a bundle of plants.

Dwarf/Compact Box hedge (Buxus sempervirens 'Suffruticosa') description

Dwarf Box, or Buxus sempervirens 'Suffruticosa', forms an attractive low-growing compact shape. The dark green, glossy foliage makes this a handsome evergreen plant that provides year-round interest and cover. Although Compact Box produces pale yellow flowers in spring and pale green fruits in summer, they are fairly non-descript and Compact Box is chosen for its easily achievable formal shape.
