Californian Lilac plants or Ceanothus 'Autumnal Blue' make a striking, evergreen shrub. It has dark-green, ovate foliage for year round cover and bright blue flowers from mid-summer to early autumn. Californian Lilac is regarded as the hardiest of all Ceanothus hedge plants and looks great trained against walls and fences.

Californian Lilac hedge (Ceanothus 'Autumnal Blue') description

Whilst Ceanothus 'Autumnal Blue' is an evergreen species, it can lose some leaves in winter. Ceanothus should either be planted in a sunny, sheltered position or given some winter fleece protection. We normally supply Ceanothus 'Autumnal Blue' but do occasionally substitute for 'Trewithan Blue' and 'Yankee Point'. If you require a specific variety, please let us know when placing your order.

Pot grown and cell grown plants are available year round and make a great option when planting a hedge. Pots come in various sizes, as do the plants grown in them, and can be planted when convenient for you. These plants will be happy in their pots, given enough water, until you’re ready to plant. Cell Grown plants are usually small, 10-30cm and a great step between Pots and Bare Roots.

Bare root hedging plants are extremely popular. They are delivered and should be planted during the dormant season (usually November to April) and can be pre ordered from mid-summer. We recommend pre-ordering where possible to reserve your plants but take new orders right the way through the season. Bare roots are a cost effective way of planting a new hedge.

Root balls are generally available from October through to April/May, though some species are available year round. The plants are field grown and then lifted with a ‘ball’ of soil around the roots that is secured with hessian and sometimes wire. Root balls are often very impressive plants that can be pre ordered from mid-summer.
