Prunus laurocerasus Hedging Description

Prunus lauroserasus ‘Rotundifolia’ hedging is more commonly known as English Laurel, Common Laurel or Cherry Laurel. This hedge plant showcases a bushy habit and attractive, polished green leaves all-year-round. Cherry Laurel produces stunning, modest creamy-white flowers appear that are popular with bees. The creamy-white flowers are followed by small, red fruits turning black in the autumn, providing a welcomed source of food for birds. With the continuously changing seasonal interest that this shrub offers, Cherry Laurel makes a beautiful decorative addition to any sized garden.

Best Uses for Common Laurel

Cherry Laurel hedge plants are a favourable choice to have in the garden for various reasons. They’re fast-growing species for a start and provides an effective privacy screen and shelter in all seasons, as the foliage is robust and evergreen. Another advantage to Prunus laurocerasus hedging is that it can tolerate pollution and arid sites, as well as dense shade, making it ideal for problem areas, such as poor soil or parts of your garden with minimal sunlight. Laurel hedging is low-maintenance and easy-to-grow but can also be pot-grown; used as an ornamental shrub to decorate patios or gardens with limited space. Also, Common Laurel can be trimmed to create a stunning formal appearance, it can also be left unpruned to establish something more natural in your landscape area. best4hedging recommend against planting Cherry Laurel as a hedge barrier to contain livestock, as the foliage of Prunus laurocerasus ‘Rotundifolia’is poisonous. Occasionally we hear concerns from our customers about whether dogs and children are at risk around Cherry Laurel hedges; however, there are no reported cases of any serious harm to pets or children. In the unlikely event of the leaves being consumed, should a reaction occur, an upset stomach would be the most likely outcome. But if you have any concerns, please contact a medical professional.

Combine Cherry Laurel Hedging With

Prunus hedging is traditionally planted as a stand-alone shrub due to its stunning, striking features and attractive appearance; it can have an aesthetic impact to your garden without relying on companion plants. Cherry Laurel has a slightly spreading habit, filling the surrounding space of its planting site and providing an attractive, bushy hedge that can be pruned into a smaller form if required. This is a common attribute for Laurel hedging.

Growth Rate of Prunus laurocerasus 'Rotundifolia'

When planted in optimum conditions, a Cherry Laurel hedge will achieve a growth of 30-60cm per year, with a final height of between 1.5 – 5 metres at maturity. If you’re looking for something with a smaller height and spread than Prunus laurocerasus, then take a look at our Hedging by Final Height department to help you choose a hedge suited to your garden.

Care Advice for Your Cherry Laurel Hedge

However, if you're looking for a more formal aesthetic, you may want to carry out a second trim to keep the foliage neat. Cherry Laurel Hedge Plants

Plants weren't horrendous but I wouldn't order online again. some of the plants were of a tenuous height to what was ordered. The box had not been handled with care during transport so some of them were missing large amounts of soil. Had to double up several of the plants to make something look half decent and then buy the extra ones locally which whilst only slightly more were vastly superior. Summary, don't skimp. Cherry Laurel Hedge Plants

Good height on plants. Hessian sacking coming loose on a few plants which made them tricky to handle (but not helped by wet weather as the soil around the root balls was very wet and seeping though the sacking)
