Umbrella Bamboo hedge (Fargesia murielae) description

Umbrella Bamboo hedging provides a great year round focal point in any garden due to its tall, fresh canes. Unlike, other bamboo plants, this variety is bushy all the way to the ground making it ideal for hedging. As it is a fast growing, clump-forming plant, it is best situated in a spacious area, allowing it room to spread or plant where the roots will be constrained (or use a root barrier).

Popular uses for Umbrella Bamboo hedges

Fargesia murielae requires watering until it is established. Once the plants have settled in, Umbrella Bamboo makes a wonderfully attractive, evergreen screening hedge.

Care and pruning advice for Umbrella Bamboo hedging

As Fargesia Jumbo is very fast growing and clump-forming it needs to be pruned regularly to prevent from spreading farther than desired. In the spring, unwanted or spindly canes should be cut down to ground level. New shoots should also be pruned once they grow taller than the rest of the hedge. Please view the Best4hedging Care and Planting instructions in our Advice section.

Pot grown and cell grown plants are available year round and make a great option when planting a hedge. Pots come in various sizes, as do the plants grown in them, and can be planted when convenient for you. These plants will be happy in their pots, given enough water, until you’re ready to plant. Cell Grown plants are usually small, 10-30cm and a great step between Pots and Bare Roots.

Bare root hedging plants are extremely popular. They are delivered and should be planted during the dormant season (usually November to April) and can be pre ordered from mid-summer. We recommend pre-ordering where possible to reserve your plants but take new orders right the way through the season. Bare roots are a cost effective way of planting a new hedge.

Root balls are generally available from October through to April/May, though some species are available year round. The plants are field grown and then lifted with a ‘ball’ of soil around the roots that is secured with hessian and sometimes wire. Root balls are often very impressive plants that can be pre ordered from mid-summer.

These hedge units are grown in troughs or strong bags where they are shaped and pruned over many years to create a hedging panel that is already knitted together, producing an impressive instant hedge.
