Golden Bamboo hedge (Phyllostachys aureocaulis) description

Golden Bamboo is perfect for moist to well-drained soils in a sheltered site. In good sunlight the canes will transition into a lovely orange/pink. As Phyllostachys aureocaulis is fast growing, it is best situated in a spacious area, allowing room to spread or alternatively, plant with a root barrier or be quick off the mark to cut out new canes as they appear. Golden Bamboo creates a unique focal point in any garden with its fluid, arching canes.

Common uses of Phyllostachys aureocaulis hedging

Golden Bamboo requires watering until it is established. Once the plants have settled in after the first year and the tall, yellow canes have arrived, Phyllostachys aureocaulis makes a wonderfully attractive, evergreen screen.

Care advice for Phyllostachys aureocaulis

As Phyllostachys aureocaulis is a fast grower, it needs pruning regularly to prevent from spreading farther than desired. In the spring, unwanted or spindly canes should be cut down to ground level. The new shoots of Phyllostachys aurea golden bamboo should also be pruned once they grow taller than the rest of the hedge. Pot grown and cell grown plants are available year round and make a great option when planting a hedge. Pots come in various sizes, as do the plants grown in them, and can be planted when convenient for you. These plants will be happy in their pots, given enough water, until you’re ready to plant. Cell Grown plants are usually small, 10-30cm and a great step between Pots and Bare Roots.

Bare root hedging plants are extremely popular. They are delivered and should be planted during the dormant season (usually November to April) and can be pre ordered from mid-summer. We recommend pre-ordering where possible to reserve your plants but take new orders right the way through the season. Bare roots are a cost effective way of planting a new hedge.

Root balls are generally available from October through to April/May, though some species are available year round. The plants are field grown and then lifted with a ‘ball’ of soil around the roots that is secured with hessian and sometimes wire. Root balls are often very impressive plants that can be pre ordered from mid-summer.

Better than any thing I've seen in local nurseries or b&q. The plants were very tall and lush. I needed help from my son to get them out of the pots, he had to split them open.
