How does windbreak hedging work?

Windbreak hedging creates a permeable barrier which still allows air to pass through but significantly reduces the speed in the process. Windbreak hedges are thought to reduce wind speed by approximately 50-60% making them far more effective than installing a fence or wall which actually creates increased turbulence. A windbreak hedge will reduce the wind speed on the leeward side to a distance of ten times its height, i.e. a 1m strip of windbreak hedging will protect an area of 10m. It is also advised to plant your windbreak hedging slightly wider than the area you wish to protect as the wind can whip around the sides.

You can use artificial screens but a living barrier is far more attractive and much longer lasting. To read more about the benefits of hedging compared to fencing, click here.

Windbreak hedging is anything that creates a thick yet permeable barrier. Evergreen hedges are great as they provide dense, year round shelter but deciduous species, including many of our native hedge plants, make fantastic windbreak hedges whilst also being of great value to wildlife. Windbreak hedges can also be of ornamental value so you can plant an attractive flowering hedge to act as an effective windbreak as well. Windbreak hedging is popularly planted in coastal situations, with many of our wind break hedges being suitable to seaside sites. You can filter this page to show windbreak hedging for coastal positions by selecting the appropriate filter on the left hand side of this page.
