Green Bamboo provides a great year round focal point in any garden due to its tall, fresh canes. As Phyllostachys bissetii is a fast growing plant, it is best situated in a spacious area, allowing it room to spread or plant where the roots will be constrained (or use a root barrier).

Green Bamboo requires watering until it is established. Once the plants have settled in, Phyllostachys bissetii makes a wonderfully attractive, evergreen screening hedge.

Care advice for Phyllostachys bissetii

As Phyllostachys bissetii is very fast growing, it needs to be pruned regularly to prevent from spreading farther than desired. In the spring, unwanted or spindly canes should be cut down to ground level. New shoots of Green Bamboo should also be pruned once they grow taller than the rest of the hedge. Pot grown and cell grown plants are available year round and make a great option when planting a hedge. Pots come in various sizes, as do the plants grown in them, and can be planted when convenient for you. These plants will be happy in their pots, given enough water, until you’re ready to plant. Cell Grown plants are usually small, 10-30cm and a great step between Pots and Bare Roots.

Bare root hedging plants are extremely popular. They are delivered and should be planted during the dormant season (usually November to April) and can be pre ordered from mid-summer. We recommend pre-ordering where possible to reserve your plants but take new orders right the way through the season. Bare roots are a cost effective way of planting a new hedge.

Root balls are generally available from October through to April/May, though some species are available year round. The plants are field grown and then lifted with a ‘ball’ of soil around the roots that is secured with hessian and sometimes wire. Root balls are often very impressive plants that can be pre ordered from mid-summer.
