Mature Pleached Hornbeam Trees (Carpinus betulus) have deeply veined, mid to dark-green foliage, with serrated leaf edges, which turns brown in the winter and clings on to the branches. Hornbeam is a native species that is great for difficult positions and poor soil. Hornbeam is a popular variety of pleached tree with good leaf cover in spring/summer and some cover retained over autumn/winter. This particular tree is a root balled product so only available between late autumn and early spring.
The term 'pleached' refers to trees that are trained to form a screen of branches and foliage with a single straight stem. The single stem of this pleached tree is 220cm tall. Planted in rows at set distances, these trees form an elevated 'green wall' that is a great alternative to high fencing. Pleached trees are often used to screen unsightly buildings and can be grown above an existing wall or fence. Used in this way pleached trees can extend the height of a privacy screen to 3 metres or more.
Mature pleached trees are established trees with full growth development on the cane head structure compared to the fresh pleached versions. Having been carefully nurtured and trained over an extended period of time, these stunning specimens are immediately impressive with beautiful, dense screens that when in full leaf, offer shade and privacy immediately on planting.
