Ligustrum vulgare, commonly known as Wild Privet, is semi-evergreen and particularly wildlife friendly. Its bushy habit creates a great nesting site for wild birds and although some may find the scent of its white flowers unpleasant, bees and butterflies love them.
Wild Privet hedging plants are best suited to moist, well-drained soils with full sun to partial shade. Wild Privet is classed as a semi-evergreen as it will lose some of its leaves in frosty conditions.
Plant Ligustrum vulgare plants to provide food and shelter to bees, butterflies and birds.
Other native hedging range.
Ligustrum vulgare has an average growth rate of 20-40cm per year and can be maintained at 1-4m.
Please be aware that Wild Privet can defoliate when transplanted. Bare Roots will defoliate more so, but you may still experience it with Root Balls and Pot Grown plants. However, Wild Privet does recover well in the spring. Prune your Wild Privet Hedge in late winter-early spring. Please view the Best 4 Hedging Care and Planting instructions in our Advice section.
For information on planting density please see the product table above. In the 'No. Per Metre' column you will find our recommended plant density for each individual plant species and root type. You can find out about planting density here.
