Berberis

Berberis is a fantastic choice for adding wildlife value to your garden. It’s dense and thorny habit provides a suitable nesting site and shelter for local wildlife, including birds, who enjoy eating the berries produced by this hedging plant. The colourful flowers are also an excellent source of nectar and pollen and are frequently visited by honeybees, bumblebees and solitary bees during the flowering periods. Different Types of Berberis Hedging

There are different varieties of Berberis hedging available, all of which have unique characteristics, but share the same qualities that make this shrub so popular.

Berberis darwinii (Darwin’s Barberry)

As the name says, Berberis darwinii hedge is linked to Charles Darwin. This type of Berberis was discovered by Charles Darwin himself in South America in 1835 during his ‘Voyage of the Beagle’. It’s also an evergreen hedging plant.

Berberis julianae (Wintergreen Barberry)

Like with Berberis darwinii, Berberis julianae is an evergreen hedge plant and was also known named after an inspiring individual. Berberis julianae was named after Juliana Schneider, the wife of the Austrian botanist and landscape architecture who explored China.

Berberis thunbergii (Japanese Barberry)

To keep the pattern going, Berberis thungergii was named after a Swedish naturalist and doctor responsible for sending the plant from Japan to Europe, Carl Peter Thunberg. Berberis thunbergii is an attractive deciduous shrub that showcases warm autumnal colours.

Berberis thunbergii Atropurpurea (Purple Barberry)

Another from Carl Peter Thunberg Barberry collection, Berberis thunbergii Atropurpurea is an attractive deciduous hedging plant that boasts orange-red autumn colours. The name Atropurpurea originates from the Latin word ‘atrox’, which means very or fiercely and ‘pururea’ meaning purple, referring to its deep foliage colour.
