Hedging for Balanced Soil Types

Browse our wide selection of hedges for normal, well-drained soil types. We always advise our customers to choose hedging plants best suited to their site. If you have a well-drained, normal soil type, you'll find the perfect hedge for your garden right here.

How to test for well-drained soil

You can carry out a simple test in your garden or planting area to check the quality of drainage.

  1. Start by digging a square hole of approximately 30 x 30cm and roughly 30-35cm deep
  2. Fill the hole with water and allow to drain
  3. Refill the hole, but this time, check how long the water takes to drain

A well-drained soil will drain at approximately 2.5cm an hour. A dry soil will drain a lot quicker, and a wet soil much more slowly.

Well drained soil types are perfect for the majority of hedging plants. You can see our full range of plants for normal soils right here. Once you have identified that you have a normal soil type, you should asses the other external factors. For example, does your planting site receive full sun throughout the day or is it always under partial shade? You can use our handy filters on the left hand side of this page to narrow down your options.
