Photinia Red Robin hedge (Photinia x fraseri 'Red Robin') description

Photinia x fraseri 'Red Robin' boasts wonderful vibrant red foliage in the spring on new growth, with older foliage showcasing a darker, glossy green that is equally attractive. Make the best of this colourful evergreen hedging by planting Photinia x fraseri 'Red Robin' in a sunny spot, though suited to partial shade, the brightest red colour will emerge in a sunnier position. A Photinia Red Robin hedge is not tightly compact, allowing the foliage to shiver slightly in a breeze and has a looser overall structure than some heavily dense species. The small, creamy white flowers that appear on Photinia hedging in spring are popular with wildlife, as are the berries that come later in the season.

Care advice for Photinia x fraseri 'Red Robin'

Sometimes Photinia x fraseri 'Red Robin' can be prone to leaf drop, in the unlikely event that this occurs, trim back your Photinia Red Robin hedge (not into leafless wood) and apply fertiliser in the spring. Please view our Hedging Care Advice page for further information on pruning Photinia hedging.

Pot grown and cell grown plants are available year round and make a great option when planting a hedge. Pots come in various sizes, as do the plants grown in them, and can be planted when convenient for you. These plants will be happy in their pots, given enough water, until you’re ready to plant. Cell Grown plants are usually small, 10-30cm and a great step between Pots and Bare Roots.

Bare root hedging plants are extremely popular. They are delivered and should be planted during the dormant season (usually November to April) and can be pre-ordered from mid-summer. We recommend pre-ordering where possible to reserve your plants but take new orders right the way through the season. Bare roots are a cost-effective way of planting a new hedge.

Root balls are generally available from October through to April/May, though some species are available year round. The plants are field grown and then lifted with a ‘ball’ of soil around the roots that is secured with hessian and sometimes wire. Root balls are often very impressive plants that can be pre ordered from mid-summer.

Instant hedging provides immediate impact to any project. These hedge units are grown in troughs or strong bags where they are shaped and pruned over many years to create a hedging panel that is already knitted together, producing an impressive instant hedge. Instant hedging is available to plant year round.
