Pussy Willow plants are a popular native hedging species, easily recognised by the pretty catkins that are silver or gold in colour. The catkins on Salix caprea begin to appear in spring, decorating the bare branches, later followed by muted green, broad leaves with silvery, hairy undersides.  Like all Willow plants, this variety will cope with all soils from normal to very wet.

Willow hedge (Salix caprea) description

Goat Willow is particularly wildlife friendly, supporting 100s of insect species. The gold, male catkins, which appear in spring are rich in nectar, making them very bee friendly. Although most Willows are thought to be best suited to wet soils (near ponds and streams) Salix caprea is actually more suited to normal, even dryer, soil and sun or partial shade.
