RSPB approved Flowering Bird Friendly Hedging Pack description

This RSPB hedging bundle includes a mixture of flowering hedge plants that have been chosen by ourselves and the RSPB Conservation Team for their ability to provide structural diversity in a garden, a good source of berries, dense foliage for shelter and nesting, and an attractiveness to insects on which birds feed. Grown completely peat free to meet the RSPB’s conservation requirements, this Flowering Bird Friendly hedging pack will decorate your garden with a burst of colourful blossoms, whilst meeting the basic needs of a huge variety of wildlife. Gardening for wildlife is more of a long-term investment than a quick fix but planting one of our Bird Friendly hedging bundles can get you on your way to creating a wildlife haven.

Bare root bundles are made up of a mixture of the following 5 species;

Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) - one of the best native hedging plants for British wildlife.
Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) - its early flowers are a great source of nectar.
Bird Cherry (Prunus padus) - fragrant flowers and good autumn colour.
Dog Rose (Rosa canina) - flowers attract insects and fruits are eaten by various bird species.
Guelder Rose (Viburnum opulus) - seasonal colour provided by red autumn leaves and berries as well as white summer flowers.

Cell grown bundles are slightly different. They include Crab Apple (Malus sylvestris) instead of Dog Rose.

Top uses for RSPB Economy Bird Friendly Hedging

RSPB approved Flowering hedging packs have all the practical features of a traditional hedge such as privacy screening, wind and noise barrier and property boundary, with the addition of attractive, showy

flowers that add a lovely aesthetic to any garden and provide a positive contribution to the conservation of local birds and other wildlife. Flowering hedges are a great way to add colour to your garden and the various species included in this RSPB approved Bird Friendly bundle ensure your hedge has something to offer wildlife in every season. For best results mix the species in your hedge and avoid planting in single species groups.

Combine RSPB Economy Bird Friendly Hedging Packs with

You can use other native hedging plants to add more seasonal interest to your Bird Friendly hedge or simply plant as a stand-alone hedge for a great garden feature.

Expected growth rate of RSPB Economy Bird Friendly Hedge Bundles

Our RSPB approved hedging bundles have an average growth rate, achieving about 20/40cm of growth a year once established and are ideal for hedges 1-4m high.

Care advice for RSPB Economy Bird Friendly Hedge

We recommend trimming your hedge in winter during the dormant period. You can also give your Flowering Bird-Friendly hedge a light prune in the summer but be sure to avoid pruning off the berries. Always check for nesting birds before carrying out any maintenance. Take a look at the best4hedging Care and Planting instructions in our Advice section for further pruning information.

Planting density for Hedging Bundles

We generally recommend that mixed hedging packs like this one should be planted in a double staggered row at 5 or 7 plants per metre (to give good density at the base which is important for wildlife habitat), but you can reduce that density to 3 per metre in a single row to economise and the plants will still form a good hedge. The rationale for a double staggered row is it provides greater density so is better for security and wildlife.

Our RSPB approved Flowering Bird Friendly hedging packs are available from November as Bare Roots, which can be pre-ordered from mid-summer, and year-round as cell-grown plants. All of our RSPB approved hedging packs have been grown peat free. You can buy RSPB approved Flowering Bird Friendly hedging from best4hedging online with total confidence in the quality of the plants you will receive.
