Star Jasmine climber (Trachelospermum Jasminoides) description

Star Jasmine also known as Confederate Jasmine or Chinese Ivy, features clusters of white star-shaped flowers that are highly fragrant and bloom from mid to late summer. This pretty, evergreen shrub has glossy dark green leaves, with new growth being a lighter shade. The green foliage then turns a more bronzed colour through the later part of the year providing winter colour.

Common uses of Chinese Ivy

This shrub is more commonly used as a climbing vine on a trellis or pergola to provide screening, shade, framing or to disguise less appealing aesthetics as well as providing a beautiful fragrance during flowering.  It can also be used as a ground cover shrub where spread rather than height is required, and will grow happily in containers.

Combine Confederate Jasmine with

Although Confederate Jasmine can grow well with other climbers, its moderately dense structure, attractive appearance and unique fragrance lends itself to being planted in a stand-alone position in the garden to be appreciated for its individual qualities.

Growth rate of Star Jasmine climbing plants

Star Jasmine plants will grow slowly only until established at which point the growth rate will increase substantially. The actual rate of growth per plant will differ based on soil, light and location with milder climates seeing a faster rate of growth than those that are slightly cooler. It can grow up to several feet a year.

Care advice for Trachelospermum Jasminoides plants

If growing as a climber, some initial training is required, however little care or maintenance is needed afterwards except simple pruning or pinching of tips to help lateral growth. As a ground cover shrub, height is easy to maintain around 60cm with simple trimming of any upward stems. Pruning should take place after flowering. Fertilise in the spring if required e.g. if leaves turn yellow. Although fairly drought tolerant, adding a layer of mulch to the soil surface will retain moisture and benefit the plant in warm weather.

Recommended planting density

Plant a minimum of 1.5m apart due to spreading nature.
