Gorse, or Ulex europaeus to use its Latin name, is very popular for its bright yellow, pea-like flowers that stand out against extremely spikey evergreen foliage. Gorse is suited to many situations including dry and coastal sites.
Gorse boasts golden yellow flowers from spring, right through to the winter. The green foliage makes a great screen and the sharp spines a useful intruder deterrent. Plant a gorse hedge to attract wildlife into your garden. The yellow, scented flowers are very bee friendly as they provide such a long season of nectar.
This evergreen makes a good privacy screen, wind break and noise barrier. Gorse is also a wonderful intruder proof hedge, as it is dense in growth and fearfully spikey. Ulex europaeus looks at home in natural settings such as informal garden hedging and provides year round interest to wildlife and humans alike.
You can either grow Gorse alone to form a dense hedge or with other native hedging plants for a native mix.
Ulex europaeus has an average growth rate of approximately 20-40cm pa. Gorse is best for dense hedging of up to 3m.
Gorse is best pruned after flowering. Please view the Best4Hedging Care and Planting instructions in our Advice section.
For planting density recommendations relating to Gorse, please see the product table above. In the 'No. Per Metre' column you will find our recommended plant density for each individual plant species and root type.
