Guelder Rose Plant Description

Viburnum opulus is a vigorous, deciduous native shrub. It’s commonly known as Guelder Rose, a name that originated from the Gelderland province in the Netherlands, where a cultivar of the plant – the Snowball Tree – is said to have originated. Despite the name, Guelder Rose is not a rose plant – it’s actually a Viburnum.

Guelder Rose is known for its stunning appearance and is the true jewel in the crown of any garden, bringing seasonal interest and attracting an abundance of local wildlife. Bullfinches and mistle thrushes are particularly big fans of Viburnum opulus’ berries, but be warned, they are mildly toxic to humans if eaten raw. Although Guelder Rose is considered self-fertile, it’s a good idea to have more than one plant to ensure pollination.

Most common uses for Viburnum opulus hedging

Generally, Viburnum opulus hedges are used for informal hedging. For any wildlife lovers, Guelder Rose offers food and shelter for birds, butterflies, and bees.

Viburnum opulus Hedge Plants

Had black spots around the leaves and the healthy new growth has snapped off in transit. I've planted it in the ground and will wait for spring. I've had many deliveries in autumn and do expect the plants to not look their best as they are going into dormancy, however that was the most unhealthy looking by far, so I'm not sure I would use the website again.
