Goat Willow plants are a popular native hedging species, easily recognised by the pretty catkins that are silver or gold in colour. The catkins on Salix caprea begin to appear in spring, decorating the bare branches, later followed by muted green, broad leaves with silvery, hairy undersides.  Like all Willow plants, this variety will cope with all soils from normal to very wet.

  • Best Features: silver and gold catkins, green foliage, wildlife value
  • Ideal For Hedges: 1-4m
  • Growth Rate: Average | 20-40cm
  • Position: Full sun, partial shade, normal-dry soils, sheltered or exposed, inland or coastal
  • Also Consider: Alder (Alnus glutinosa) is also great for wet soils.

Willow hedge (Salix caprea) description

Goat Willow is particularly wildlife-friendly, supporting 100's of insect species. The gold, male catkins, which appear in spring are rich in nectar, making them very bee-friendly. Although most Willows are thought to be best suited to wet soils (near ponds and streams) Salix caprea is actually more suited to normal, well-drained soil and sun or partial shade.

Most popular uses for goat willow hedges

Willow plants are ideal for wildlife-friendly gardens and for informal mixed native hedging.

Combine Salix capea with

Plant Pussy Willow alone for an attractive, wildlife-friendly feature plant or mix with other native hedging plants.

Expected growth of Willow hedge plants
