English Yew hedge plants (Taxus baccata) are known as the King of Hedging. With dark-green, conifer foliage that is easily trimmed and has a slow growth rate, this is an ideal hedging choice for creating Topiary shapes such as Topiary Balls. With a looser growing habit than the more commonly used Box Topiary, Taxus baccata topiary balls can be used in a slightly more informal garden setting, or alongside Box Topiary Balls to create contrast.

  • Best Features: Evergreen foliage, year-round interest, slow-growing for easy maintenance, RHS Hedging
  • Ideal For Hedges: Garden features, patios, punctuating hedges, doorways and entranceways
  • Growth Rate: Slow to Average | 20-40cm a year
  • Position: Any normal soil (or dry if watered), sun to full shade, exposed inland
  • Also Consider: Pot grown English Yew to create your own topiary, Box Topiary Balls for the classic topiary look, or Ilex Crenata Topiary Balls for another alternative topiary species, which like Yew, is resistant to Box blight.

Yew topiary description

Whilst Buxus sempervirens has traditionally been the species of choice to create Topiary Balls from, more gardeners are on the lookout for alternatives which aren't susceptible to Box Moth or Box Blight when these are an issue in their locale, and Yew (Taxus bacatta) is certainly one such species. Like any other Topiary Balls, our Yew Topiary Balls are great when repotted in pots and planters and used in archways and entranceways, as well as when planted out in the ground to punctuate hedges. With multiple sizes available, there's a number of ways you can use Topiary Balls, our favourites of which we cover in the best4hedging blog. For other sizes and shapes not listed here, please call us to enquire.

How to use Topiary balls in your planting scheme

Yew Topiary is ideal for making a statement and a pair of beautiful Topiary balls either side of your front door will make the neighbours jealous! Yew Topiary trees have many uses and can be placed at intervals along garden borders or hedging to make a flowing statement.

Growth rate of Taxus topiary

A slow to average growing species, Yew will achieve 20-40cm a year and can be easily maintained to reach a height of 2m - 4m.

How to care for Yew topiary balls

We suggest trimming your Yew Topiary little and often to ensure a neat, show-garden finish. However, with its looser growing habit when compared to Box, you can simply tidy up Yew topiary once or twice a year for a more informal look. Please view the best4hedging Care and Planting instructions in our Advice section. More general care and advice for Yew can be found on the Yew Hedging page.

Planting density recommendations for Taxus topiary shapes

Planting density for topiary trees is really down to personal preference. You can plant Yew topiary balls close together to form a row of 'bumps' or plant them in intervals along your hedging line.

The vast majority of our Yew Topiary plants are grown in the UK though we now and then source them from specialised nurseries out of the country, where we know the quality cannot be rivalled. At best4hedging we always strive to bring you the freshest, highest quality plants whilst keeping our prices competitive, so you can source Taxus bacatta topiary shapes from us with complete confidence.
