The award-winning Buddleia ‘Black Knight’ Butterfly Bush features long, intense indigo flower spikes, sweetly fragrant, between July and September which encourage beneficial pollinators, including butterflies to the garden. A fast-growing, bushy, deciduous shrub with long lance-like green leaves, it enjoys a sunny bed or border and thrives in most soil types. Growth can be up to 3m after 5-10 years. Overall, very low maintenance and considered easy to grow. Drought resistant.
Buddleia davidii 'Black Knight' also known as Butterfly Bush 'Black Knight' is a deciduous, vigorous shrub with deep purple-violet, sweetly scented flower spikes which attract a number of pollinators, most notably butterflies and for which it is named. A current favourite in gardens today, the Buddleia 'Black Knight' has long, lance-like green leaves with pale undersides and a slightly arching habit. The flowering period is between July and September, ideal for pollinators needing food a little later in the summer season and for extending the blooming season in the garden. In autumn the leaves turn to a buttery-gold before falling.
Buddleia 'Black Knight' is a bushy shrub with fairly vigorous growth - up to 40cm a year. It can grow to around 10ft tall and equally wide so will benefit from a decent amount of space in a sunny bed or border in which to thrive. Deadheading the flowers once spent will encourage more blooms and a hard prune around March will ensure good growth and flower production come the summer.
A recipient of the RHS 'Award of Garden Merit', this pretty and fragrant plant is certainly eye-catching and is ideal for sunnier positions, although it will tolerate partial shade. Grow in fertile soil of any type with average moisture and well drained.
