Who are best4hedging?

best4Hedging are industry leading experts with years of experience in growing and dispatching hedging. Having sold over 1 million plants since we first began trading online in 2009, we are a reliable and trusted retailer of quality hedging plants. We’re dedicated to providing our customers with a huge selection of hedge plants, trees and topiary, all at competitive prices.

Our busy team are located at our main office in Lancashire and are available 7 days a week for sales enquiries, help and advice, and any other general queries you may have.

For more information on the best4Hedging team and an insight into the people behind the success of our business, head to our About Us page.

Are you open to the public?

As we are a busy dispatch site rather than a garden centre, unfortunately, we are not open to the public. If you wish to see any of our plants before purchasing, this can be arranged. All we ask is that you call us in advance so we can ensure there is a member of the team available to accompany you safely around the site.

Our Website

Is everything listed on best4hedging in stock?

The vast majority of our hedging plants are in stock year-round. However, some plant types are only available at certain times of the year. These include bare root and root ball plants which are delivered from November to April but can be pre-ordered in advance. If you pre-order any of our hedging plants, we will keep you up to date with the progress and expected dispatch date of your order via email. If you have any other queries our Sales team can be contacted on 01257 261 243 or you can email them at enquiries@best4hedging.co.uk or trade@best4hedging.co.uk for trade only related enquiries

All items will show either an 'Add' to basket button or 'Pre-order' button. If for any reason we cannot dispatch an item straight away, will contact you to let you know when you can expect to receive your order.

Minimum Order Quantities

We have minimum order quantities for certain plants where, due to their size, it would not be cost-effective to send them out individually.

We clearly state which plants have a minimum order quantity in the price table on each product page. You can find the information in the middle column, where, if a minimum order quantity applies it will be stated e.g. ‘Min Qty 12’.  At best4hedging we always aim to meet customer needs so if you do require less than the minimum order quantity, please give us a call on 01257 261 243  and we can discuss your delivery options.

Do I need an account to check the progress of my order?

When ordering online you can create a best4hedging account which allows you to log in and check the progress of your order. You do not have to open an account but it does allow you to track your order more easily. If you have opted out of creating an account you can call or email our Service team on 01257 447 533 or email enquiries@best4hedging.co.uk  and we will be happy to give you an update. For trade account customers, contact the Trade team on 01257 263 876

Our Plants

Are your plants UK grown?

At best4hedging we pride ourselves on growing over 95% of our hedging plants within the U.K. All of our growing sites are managed by experienced nursery staff who nurture the plants until they’re ready for despatch. In order to provide the best hedge plants for our customers, we occasionally use specialist growers outside of the U.K. As with our local growing sites, we also thoroughly check the standards of non-UK sites to ensure they meet the high quality our customers have come to expect.

How can I be confident in the quality of your hedging plants?

The quality of our hedging plants is central to our company values and one of the many reasons why we have so many loyal customers. You can take complete confidence in the knowledge that all of our nursery staff are highly qualified to ensure your hedging plants receive the best care whilst on site. Following this, rigorous quality checks are carried out on every order prior to dispatch, making sure that your plants arrive in the healthiest condition.

If, for any reason, you are unhappy with your hedging plants, please do not hesitate to contact us. Our dedicated Customer Care team are available five days a week (plus some weekends during peak season), to ensure any problems are resolved as swiftly as possible. You can contact us on 01257 261 243 or email us enquiries@best4hedging.co.uk Trade customers should contact the Trade team on 01257 263 876 or email trade@best4hedging.co.uk

How are your plants cared for?

As experts in the industry, we understand what it takes to provide high-quality hedging plants. Our skilled team of nursery staff have years of experience dealing with the daily tasks involved in looking after thousands of plants. They make sure every single plant is fed, watered, pruned and even talked to regularly until they arrive at our dispatch centre. From the moment our hedging plants arrive at the despatch centre, until ready for delivery, they are provided with the same high level of care.

Why are some plants only available during winter?

At best4hedging we have a great variety of hedging plants in a choice of sizes and root types. Pot grown and cell grown hedge plants are available year round, whereas bare root and root ball hedge plants are only available from November to April depending on the weather. The bare root season can be extended until mid/late May for some hedging species through the use of cold storage. Box root ball hedging is an exception to this as it has a sturdier root system and is available year round. Yew root ball hedging is also available outside of the normal root ball season due to its strong root system.

Bare root and root ball plants are grown in a field and can only be lifted when they are dormant, as this process interferes with the root system. Lifting in winter, when the roots are dormant, ensures the root systems are disturbed as little as possible resulting in a high success rate once re-planted.

What are the benefits of planting bare root hedging plants?

The low price of bare root hedge plants is in no way an indication that bare root plants are of a lesser standard than any of the other root types we have available. Bare roots are an excellent, cost-effective option, especially when planting in large quantities. The reason that bare roots are less expensive than other root types, such as pot grown plants, is that they cost a lot less to grow, care for and despatch. Bare roots are grown in a field so they do not require annual re-potting, which reduces the growing cost. As bare roots do not carry with them a large amount of soil, they cost less for us to transport which also lowers the purchase price for you, the customer.

We regularly advise our customers to purchase bare root hedge plants when they require a large quantity of plants. It works out cheaper to purchase bare root plants than if you were to buy the same amount of plants in a different root type.

Can you supply larger plants than those on your website?

At best4hedging we offer a huge variety of hedging plants in a great choice of sizes to accommodate most customer needs; however, we understand that occasionally a project requires something outside of our usual size range. Due to our excellent industry contacts and years of experience sourcing high-quality plants, including large hedging plants, we can always find exactly what you need.

Simply call our sales team on 01257 261 243 or email enquiries@best4hedging.co.uk and we’ll be happy to help! Trade customers should contact the Trade team on 01257 263 876 or email trade@best4hedging.co.uk

Can you send me a photograph of the stock before I place my order?

Here at best4hedging, we have an extensive photography catalogue which we aim to keep as up to date as possible. To preview an example of the stock you’ll be receiving, click on the thumbnail image in the table which corresponds to the plant size you wish to order. If the image you require is unavailable, or you need further help, please email us at enquiries@best4hedging.co.uk or call us on 01257 261 243 and we will be happy to send you a photo. Trade customers can contact the Trade team also who will be able to provide the same facility.

We do stress that each and every batch of plants differ depending on the season, therefore our images are to be used as a guide.

Instant Hedging

best4hedging offer a fantastic range of instant hedges, available in our most popular hedging species, which are perfect for achieving an established hedge quickly. Instant hedging refers to hedge units that have been grown in troughs (usually a metre long). These trough grown hedges have been regularly pruned whilst allowing the plants to knit together to form a solid hedging unit. Not only do the hedge plants knit together, so do the root systems, which makes for a strong, healthy hedge with a high success rate. Our instant hedges are delivered in their troughs or bags and can be planted at any time of year, making them a convenient planting choice.

This instant hedge effect requires the skilled work of experienced nursery staff and to achieve this look in your own garden, with individual hedge plants, could take between 2-5 years. The time, skill and resources that go into growing these pre-clipped hedging troughs are reflected in their price. However, the immediate effect of planting any of our instant hedging troughs is completely worthwhile and will provide you with a show-garden quality hedge, instantly.

How is instant hedging delivered?

All of our instant hedging is delivered on pallets, in the troughs or bags they were grown in. The troughs are made from either firm plastic or heavy-duty hessian, both of which have handles at either end for easy manoeuvring. We use these materials to ensure your instant hedging units are as light as possible. All of our instant hedge units can be handled by two fit people.

How do I plant instant hedging?

Planting instant hedging couldn't be easier. There’s no need to worry about calculating how many plants you need per metre as they have already been spaced out for you. Simply buy one 1m unit for every metre of hedge you require.

  • Dig your trench to roughly the same depth as your instant hedging trough (approx. 30cm and slightly smaller for instant box hedging) but allow space for digging in any organic matter such as horse manure.
  • Once your trench is ready, measure out how much rootgrow you will need and sprinkle into the bottom of the trench.
  • Next, remove the hedging unit from its trough or bag and place into the trench. Backfill, firming the soil down gently as you go.
  • Finally, give your hedge generous watering, step back and admire your new instant hedge!

Planting Queries

Do you offer a planting service?

Planting a hedge is really easy and the majority of our customers do it themselves or use a local gardener or landscaper. Although we don't offer a planting service we can recommend a local member of the British Association of Landscape Industries, for large planting projects.

For more information on how to plant your own hedge, see our Planting Advice section as well as our best4hedging YouTube channel for easy to follow, how-to videos.

When is the best time of year to plant?

At best4hedging we have a huge choice of different species and root types. Our vast range includes hedging plants that can be planted year-round as well as hedge plants that can only be planted during the dormant season – Autumn to Spring.

Our pot grown and cell grown hedging plants can be purchased and planted year-round so you do not need to worry about what time of year it is.

Our bare root and root ball hedge plants are available from late autumn to spring, as they can only be planted when dormant. For some species, the dormant period can be extended through the use of cold storage. Any concerns regarding planting times are already covered as we only start to despatch bare root and root ball plants when they are ready to be planted. The only exception to this rule is Box (Buxus sempervirens). Box root balls can be purchased and planted year-round due to their strong and stable root system.

For information on planting – see our best4hedging YouTube channel for our quick, how-to plant guides.

How long can my plants be left in their packaging?

At best4hedging we emphasise the fact that our hedging plants are living things and require water, light and fresh air to survive. This being said, we understand that it is not always possible to plant straight away. Therefore, there are certain short term measures that can be taken to ensure your plants receive the care they need until you’re ready to plant.

Bare root hedge plants – If you will be planting within a few days from delivery it is best to remove your hedge plants from the box or pallet and thoroughly dampen the roots without drenching them. They can then be kept in the plastic bags provided and stored in a cool, dry place e.g. a shed or garage – not a greenhouse!

If you are not able to plant within a few days, it is advisable to heel your bare roots in. Heeling in involves digging a hole, big enough to contain the entire root mass, in an unused area of your garden. You can then place your bare roots into the hole, at a 45-degree angle, and gently firm the soil around. Your bare root plants will be happy here for a few weeks but will be much happier when they’re in their final planting position.

Root ball hedge plants – This root type is delivered with its root mass encased in a biodegradable hessian sack which does not need to be removed prior to planting. If you cannot plant your root ball hedging straight away, remove your hedge plants from the pallet and store in a cool, dry place, keeping the roots well watered and away from any frost – a sheet of tarpaulin, for example, can protect from frost. However, we do advise planting your root ball plants as soon as you can to ensure the best possible success rate.

Pot grown hedge plants – Once you have removed your plants from the delivery box or pallet, they can remain in their containers for several weeks until you are ready to plant. In the meantime, simply make sure that the soil is moist and the plants are kept sheltered from full sun or harsh winds.

Cell grown hedge plants – If you are not planting your cell grown plants immediately, we advise opening the box, sprinkling the roots with water and then storing in a cool, dry place. Your cell grown plants can remain in their box (open) for a few days but we highly recommend planting as quickly as possible to achieve the healthiest hedge.

For further information on planting, specific to root types, see our Planting Advice section.

Do I need to prune my hedging plants on arrival?

It is a good idea to give your new hedge a light prune straight after planting. This will encourage new growth in your hedge whilst also creating a uniformed shape from the start and will ensure all of your hedge plants grow at a similar rate.

The only exception to this rule is Box hedging. Box should not be pruned straight after planting as the roots of Buxus plants require a little longer than other hedge plants to fully establish.

If the ground is frozen, can I plant? If not, how do I store my plants during cold weather?

When a ground frost is present it is usually only the top couple of inches of ground that is hard and cold, beneath the ground should still be a safe environment for your plants' root system. Due to the availability of bare root and root ball hedging it is inevitable that some orders will be delivered after a frost. Don’t panic!

You can either store your plants in a shed or garage where the conditions are dry and frost-free. Do not store your plants in a greenhouse as this can damage the root system and always remember to dampen the roots with water to ensure they remain moist. Or if you can dig the ground, go ahead and plant anyway – once the roots are protected by the soil your plants are safe from frost damage.

Top tip: If you’re concerned about an upcoming frost then prepare your ground in advance of delivery and cover with a frost-proof layer, such as tarpaulin, to keep the ground soft beneath. Then simply dig over once your hedge plants arrive.

How do I improve the quality of my soil?

It’s important to make sure your soil is of a decent quality in order for the roots of your hedging plants to strongly establish and find the nutrients they require. You can do this by digging some well-rotted, organic matter such as horse manure or garden compost through your planting site. Following this, we recommend using Rootgrow, which you can find in our Planting Essentials section.

Read more in our blog

Should I use horse manure?

Although we do recommend using horse manure when planting your hedge, it is not essential. If you are planting with Rootgrow and Bonemeal, your hedge will already be receiving a sufficient amount of nutrients. If you do choose to plant with horse manure, we stress the importance of using well-rotted manure as fresh manure is too rich for new plants and can damage the root system.

Do I leave the hessian sack on root ball plants when I plant them?

Yes, the hessian sack is bio-degradable and will disintegrate over time so there is no need to worry about damage to the environment. It is important to leave the hessian sack on the roots as it holds them together and provides protection before they reach their final planting site. You can, if you wish, loosen the knot around the base of the trunk once the plant is in the ground, however this isn’t necessary.

How much Rootgrow / Bonemeal should I use?

Rootgrow can be applied in two ways. It can either be sprinkled into the planting hole in its granule form, or made into a gel, ideal for dipping bare roots. Apart from the 150g packet, which is granule only, all sizes of Rootgrow can be made into a gel formula or sprinkled. We recommend using the gel method for bare roots, as the paste will go much further and be more cost-effective than granules. Please visit our Rootgrow page and click on the 'How much do I need?' button for our easy to follow user guide. Usage is approximate as root sizes vary by species.

If you are ordering Rootgrow with Box bare root hedging then please add 20% to the recommended usage level to allow for the large root system.

Bonemeal should be mixed into your backfill or sprinkled on the surface after planting to help maintain an established hedge. Please visit our Bonemeal page and click on the 'How much do I need?' button for our easy to follow user guide.

How do I use Bonemeal?

A great, slow-releasing fertiliser, Bonemeal should be applied to the soil as opposed to the roots of the plant. You can do this by forking it through your backfill, ensuring it is mixed in well with the soil allowing the nutrients to reach the roots. You can also sprinkle your Bonemeal onto the surface of the soil after planting.

Please note that there are certain precautions to take when applying bonemeal to sites where animals may graze. Land grazed by pigs should not be used for two months after application and for three weeks for other farm animals. There is no concern for children or pets but to deter dogs from digging up bonemeal we advise thoroughly mixing with your soil.

How do I use RootGrow?

Rootgrow can be applied in two different ways but the key thing to remember is that it should be applied directly to the roots of your plants. For root ball, pot grown and cell grown plants, you can sprinkle the granules into the planting hole. For bare root plants, Rootgrow can be made into a gel form and the roots of the plants dipped into the mixture before placing into the planting hole.

Full instructions are included with the product but for more information, watch our short video on how-to prepare and use Rootgrow.

My Rootgrow / Bonemeal isn’t in with my order, what should I do?

To make sure that your Rootgrow or Bonemeal is safe during transit, we pack the products in the centre of pallet orders and at the bottom of box orders. We ask that you fully unpack your plants to ensure your Rootgrow or Bonemeal is not hidden inside your order. If after checking this, you still cannot find your Rootgrow or Bonemeal, please give our Service team a call on 01257 447 533  and they will be happy to help.

Do you sell anything to prevent weeds?

Yes, at best4hedging we stock two different weed suppressing products. The first being Mulch Mat, which is a biodegradable fabric made from 100% recycled materials. The second option is Mypex ground cover which is made from a woven fabric. Both of these products insulate the soil and protect your plants from weeds without the need for chemical weed killers (which can be detrimental to your hedge). You can find both of these weed suppressing fabrics in our range of Planting Essentials.

Hedge Aftercare

How often do I water my hedging plants?

The general rule of thumb when it comes to watering is to thoroughly water your plants a few times a week rather than little and often. Newly planted hedges require more watering than established hedges and you should increase or decrease your watering regime to reflect the weather conditions. For example, if the weather is hot and dry, you will need to water more often but if periods of heavy rain occur you should reduce watering.

The best time to water hedging plants is in the morning or evening as watering during the day can lead to the moisture evaporating off the surface of the soil before it reaches the roots of your plants. Leaf scorch can also occur if you water the leaves during full sun, so it is always best to direct watering to the roots.

In relation to over watering it is important to remember that different hedging plants are suited to different soil types. For example, Alder hedging prefers a wet soil whereas Lavender hedging grows best in normal to dry soil types. Bearing this in mind, overwatering can be easily avoided by taking a few simple steps. If you notice that the water is not absorbing into the soil, reduce watering accordingly. A simple test to check if your soil is too dry is to collect a sample of soil from below the surface, we recommend at least 2 inches deep. If the soil feels dry, your plants need more water, if the soil feels moist, they don’t.

How do I use Seaweed feed?

Seaweed feed is a liquid fertiliser applied directly to the foliage in late spring to early summer. It contains nitrate, phosphate and potassium to promote root and shoot growth. It should not be used undiluted, diluting instructions can be found on the bottle.

Plant Problems

Why are the leaves of my hedging plants different colours?

Often with new plants, the leaves can differ in colour, this is completely normal as the growing sites may vary. For example, a plant that is grown in a windier spot may exhibit different foliage colour to that of a plant grown in a more sheltered location. Soil type can also have an impact on the colour of the leaves due to the nutrients that are available. With some species of hedging plants, the young foliage displays a brighter colour, however, as the plants mature this will even out.

Once your plants are in position they will be exposed to the same environmental conditions resulting in more consistently coloured leaves.

Why are there holes in the leaves of my hedging plants?

Holes in the leaves of hedging plants can be quite common but are not a serious concern. They are often due to leaf scorch rather than disease and the damaged leaves will fall off as new foliage appears in the spring.

An easy way to help prevent leaf scorch is by watering in the morning or evening when the sun is not strong. Any water remaining on the leaves may be evaporated by strong sun, which can burn through the leaves causing holes. This is not detrimental to the overall health of the plant in any way but is best avoided where possible. During periods of sun showers, when a combination of moisture on the leaves and sunshine are inevitable, leaf scorch is unfortunately unavoidable but your plants will soon recover.

Why have the leaves of my hedge plants turned yellow?

Although this is not a common occurrence, we understand that if you find the foliage of your plants turning yellow this can be quite worrying. However, it can simply be caused by transplant shock when your young hedging plants are adjusting to their new site. As long as you continue to care for your plants this should soon settle down and the normal colour will return. If after a month, the leaves of your plants are still yellow, our Sales and Service team are available for advice and to discuss further options. You can reach them on 01257 261 243  or email at enquiries@best4hedging.co.uk sending photos of your hedge where possible.  Trade customers should contact the Trade team on 01257 263 876 or email trade@best4hedging.co.uk
