Griselinia hedging - what's in a name

Griselinia hedge plants are native to New Zealand, hence the common name, New Zealand Privet, however, this hardy hedge plant is also well suited to our UK climate. The English translation of its Latin name is 'of the sea shore' and quite rightly so; Griselinia hedging is ideal for seaside positions, as it is very tolerant of salt laden air and coastal exposure. Griselinia makes a popular hedge for privacy screening, in less than ideal situations. This coastal hedging plant is named after Venetian botanist Franc Griselini and is also known as New Zealand Broadleaf, Broadleaf or Kapuka plant.

Griselinia hedging and wildlife

Although Griselinia hedging is a native to the far away shores of New Zealand, you needn't have a flock of kiwi birds in your garden for this hedge to be a popular spot for wildlife. The dense, leathery leaves of Griselina hedging provide good cover for our own nesting birds, whilst the berries offer a source of food that some birds will eat.
