These evergreen flowering hedges make wonderful year-long adornments to your garden, sprouting flowers in the autumn-winter months and producing edible fleshy orange fruit, known as droops, in late spring.

Our collection has been curated to include only the most beautiful Elaeagnus variants, chosen for their appearance and quality. As a species of Oleaster, these flowering hedges feature silver-grey leaves with a silvery underside and small silver dots on top. These hard-wearing hedges are perfect for growing in poor soil conditions, including coastal gardens where they can withstand salty air and strong winds. Boasting nitrogen-fixing properties, Elaeagnus makes a wonderful companion for orchards, improving the soil conditions for other plants. Whether you are looking to redesign your garden or reduce noise from nearby roads, these delightful hedges will convert your space into a floral sanctuary.

Oleaster Hedge

The unusual thing about Elaeagnus hedges is that the flowers appear in autumn and the berries in the spring; on most of our other hedging plants, these features normally develop in the reverse order. The foliage of an Oleaster hedge is evergreen and gives a silvery, grey effect due to the silvery underside and tiny silver dots on the top of the leaves.

Elaeagnus hedging is popular for its attractive appearance and ability to grow quickly, even when faced with adverse climate and soil conditions.

Origin and uses of Elaeagnus

The etymological root of Elaeagnus derives from the Latin elaia meaning olive, possibly referring to the fruits that appear on Elaeagnus hedging.

Certain cultivars of this plant contain high amounts of antioxidants that have proved effective against cancer and slowing the growth of tumors. Elaeagnus also has nitrogen fixing properties so will grow well in poor soils, whilst improving the conditions for other plants. Because of this, Eleagnus makes a great companion plant, especially in orchards, as it has been proven to increase fruit yields by 10%.

Elaeagnus is one of our best hedging plants for coastal situations, as it is tolerant of strong winds and salt air. It makes a fantastic wind break and the fragrant flowers are an added bonus. If you are looking for a plant suited to troublesome areas, Elaeagnus hedging is for you!
