Ajuga reptans 'Atropurpurea' is commonly known as Dark Purple Bugle and is a shade-loving, evergreen perennial, perfect for those awkward north-facing borders that need a bit of colour and life injecting. Ideal for ground cover in full or partial shade, this colourful perennial features deep purple-bronze/green scalloped leaves which form dense foliage. In spring and summer, upright flower spikes emerge and bloom with clusters of vibrant deep-blue blooms. 

Dark Purple Bugle will thrive in a shady spot anywhere. It's incredibly hardy and will weather the coldest winters quite happily. It grows best in loamy and clay soils as long as they have good drainage.

Ajuga reptans 'Atropurpurea' will grow to a maximum height of just 50cm and spreads up to 1m so front of border or beds is the perfect spot; you can even use this perennial to under-plant hedging or other shrubs. With its dense foliage it is especially useful at suppressing weeds by preventing light reaching the soil.
