Definition of hedging shrubs
Hedge shrubs are defined as different to trees as they have multiple stems and are overall shorter in height. Many species grow as both shrubs and trees depending on the environmental conditions.
Sub-shrubs are another category in botany which are classified as shrubs which grow to less than 2m. At best4hedging, we do not distinguish between height in this way. In order to make it as simple as possible for our customers, we provide a choice of different species, which are all ideal shrubs for hedging. To find hedging plants with a greater final height, use our Hedging by Final Height tool.
How to prune hedging shrubs
There are many techniques in regard to pruning garden hedging shrubs, one technique called 'renewal pruning or 'stooling' refers to the practice of cutting back the branches to about 2 inches from the ground every year or so. This promotes new growth, flower production and colour vibrancy. This is a common pruning technique for hedging shrubs with colourful stems as they grow back with a much more vivid bark colour.
