Saucer Magnolia (Magnolia × soulangeana) is truly magnificent when it bursts into bloom each spring. The goblet-shaped flowers in shades of pink, purple and white are very large and fragrant often growing up to 10 inches wide. The flowers cover the branches before the leaves emerge, so you get a dazzling display of early spring beauty before the lush green foliage emerges. This develops golden tones in autumn for additional seasonal interest.
Magnolia x soulangeana is best positioned in full sun to partial shade. Plant in moist, well-drained soil that is either slightly acidic or neutral. It needs regular water when young but is actually drought tlerant once established. It's very hardy in the UK even tolerating temperatures down to -15, but still prefers a sheltered location.
Saucer Magnolia grows on average 3-60cm a year and grows upwards with a spreading canopy. It eventually reaches around 4-6m in height with a canopy spread of around 5m.
