Commonly known as 'Oregon Grape' for the black summer grape-like berries it produces, Mahonia aquifolium is a hardy, spreading evergreen shrub which offers year-round colour and interest in the garden. Well known for its glossy holly-like green leaves and bright, cheery clusters of yellow flowers in spring, its foliage also changes colour in winter to exhibit lovely bronze and purple tones for additional seasonal interest.

Mahonia aquifolium is an ideal addition to wildife garden as pollinators absolutely love the flowers. Birds, such as blackbirds and thrushes adore the berries, which provide an important source of food for them in late summer and autumn. The berries are considered edible for humans too but are very bitter when raw, however they can be used for jams, cordials or even wine!

Mahonia aquifolium is very hardy and adaptable, growing in any location or soil but grows best in shadier conditions, although it will tolerate some sun too. It's especially useful in difficult areas such as dry shade or beneath trees. It will grow to a maximum height and spread of 1 x 1.5m but at a slow rate.
