The Egremont Russet is a classic apple variety, popular in gardens across the UK and suitable for cooler, high rainfall areas. Ideal for eating raw, juicing or baking.
The Egremont Russet is a beloved dessert apple, especially suited to the cooler, rainier regions of the UK. It's part of pollination group 2 and is well-known for producing reliable and plentiful crops. These medium-sized apples have a yellowish-green skin, often partly blushed with brownish-red, and are covered in a charming russet. The nutty flavour and sweet, dense flesh make the Egremont Russet a favourite among apple lovers. You'll find these apples at their best from October through December.
While the Egremont Russet is partially self-fertile, it will do even better with a pollination partner nearby. It’s good to note that this variety might not be the best choice for the very coldest parts of the UK. The apple’s skin has a rustic look, with a dull orange-yellow colour and plenty of russeting. Inside, the pale cream flesh is dense, a bit like a slightly under-ripe pear, but with a lovely sweetness that develops as it ripens. The flesh is moist but tends to dry out a bit during storage, giving it a texture more like a firm pear than a juicy apple.
Dating back to the Victorian era, the Egremont Russet is still a popular choice for those who appreciate traditional English apples. Its flavour is delicate and sweet, with a distinctive nutty note that sets it apart. This apple is wonderfully versatile, great for enjoying fresh, and pairs beautifully with savoury dishes like salads, or alongside cheese. Despite its softer texture, the Egremont Russet holds a nice firmness, making it a long-standing favourite in British orchards.
