Popular with wildlife, the Malus Red Sentinel Tree has a lot to offer any garden. The fruits persist through to winter and are ideal for making jellies. This tree is perfect for growing in an urban garden as it is tolerant of pollution. Malus Red Sentinel will grow in full sun to partial shade and prefers a moist, but well-drained soil.
Common Name: Flowering Crab Apple Tree
Best Features: White flowers, cherry-like red fruit, wildlife value, RHS AGM
Position: Full sun-partial shade, sheltered or exposed, moist-normal soil
The Red Sentinel crab apple tree (Malus x robusta 'Red Sentinel') is a lovely, ornamental choice that's just right for small gardens, especially in urban areas. Growing to around 6 to 7 metres tall, it's a great option if you're working with limited space. Its dark green leaves, reaching up to 8 cm long, make a beautiful backdrop for the tree's charming blossoms and vibrant fruit.
Come late April, this tree puts on a delightful show with a burst of single, white flowers, often with a hint of pink, emerging from purple buds. These fragrant flowers create a gentle and balanced display against the bright green leaves, adding a touch of elegance without overwhelming the tree.
As the year goes on, the tree produces clusters of small, cherry-like fruits, about 2.5 cm in size. These glossy, deep red fruits, sometimes with a yellow tint, hang on the branches well into winter, bringing colour and interest to your garden for months. Not only are they decorative, but they're also edible, with a sharp flavour that's perfect for making purées, jellies, and other tasty treats. The fruits stay on the branches long into the winter, brightening up your garden during the colder months, and birds usually don't start nibbling on them until after a few hard frosts have softened them up.
