Golden Barberry / Evergreen Berberis hedge (Berberis x stenophylla) description
A superbly wildlife friendly hedge that will keep intruders at bay, Berberis x stenophylla boasts small, glossy, dark green foliage at the base of which large spines sit. In the spring masses of golden yellow, cup-shaped, little flowers are borne in clusters; these flowers are popular with bees for their nectar and release a pleasant fragrance. A fast grower, Berberis x stenophylla is easy to maintain and offers year-round interest.
Common uses of Golden Barberry
This variety of Berberis has many uses, it is spiky and has a dense growth habit, which makes it the ideal intruder deterrent; the flowers are colourful in the spring and attractive to wildlife, as are the berries. As Berberis x stenophylla is evergreen it makes the ideal privacy screen. Golden Berberis is suited to all but very wet sites and will grow in shade, though fewer flowers are likely in heavy shade.
