Japanese Barberry (Berberis thunbergii) description
Often known as Japanese Barberry, Berberis thunbergii is a popular shrub that offers shelter for wildlife whilst creating a dense, prickly hedge. Being a compact Berberis, thunbergii makes a good alternative to Box (Buxus sempervirens), especially where Box blight has been present.
Common uses for thunbergii Berberis hedges
Ideal for use as an intruder deterrent Berberis thunbergii can be kept small and so it is ideal for planting below windows to deter unwanted visitors. Berberis thunbergii is slow growing, small and suited to all but the wettest sites. Full shade, coastal and exposed sites are no problem for Japanese Berberis. Keep it tight and tidy or allow this Berberis to bush out a little for a more natural look.
Combine thunbergii Berberis with
Grow Berberis thunbergii alone for a more uniform look or try combing randomly with Purple Berberis (Berberis thun. atropurpurea) for a splash of extra colour. If you're creating a magnificent mix of shrubs for hedging, then consider our Tapestry hedging as part of our Mixed Hedging pack range.
Growth rate of Japanese Barberry hedging
This slow growing plant will achieve 10-15cm a year. Japanese Barberry is great for heights up to 1m.
