English Lavender hedge (Lavandula angustifolia) description

Old English Lavender is a bushy shrub, ideal for creating a low, vibrant garden hedge. The flowers of Lavandula angustifolia appear in summer and are incredibly popular with bees and butterflies. The evergreen foliage provides year-round interest and perfectly complements the masses of colourful flowers. Our normal variety of Lavandula angustifolia is the very famous and well regarded Lavender Munstead but occasionally we substitute other very similar varieties – if you definitely require Lavandula angustifolia Munstead please speak to us to check the current batch.

Most common uses for English Lavender hedge plants

Use Lavender hedging to border pathways or plant above low walls. Lavender is wonderful for rockery gardens, creating height and texture and adding a touch of wildlife-friendly colour. Lavandula angustifolia fits perfectly into a formal garden setting, and works equally as well when used with a more relaxed garden style.

Care advice for English Lavender hedge plants

English Lavender hedge plants prefer a well-drained position with full sun; they are tolerant of drought so it is important to ensure that you do not overwater your Lavender hedging. Old English Lavender is a low maintenance shrub that requires little attention; however, you should prune your hedges after flowering, in late August - September. Lavender angustifolia can handle hard pruning, so we recommend cutting back approximately one-third of the plant foliage. This will help frothy new foliage to develop before the winter frosts and encourage maximum flowering on your Lavender hedging from the first summer onwards. Should you wish to slightly delay flowering time, you can also lightly prune your English Lavender hedge plants in April. For any further guidance on how to care for or prune your hedge, please visit the best4hedging advice section.
