The Griselinia littoralis hedge plant is one of our top 10 selling species and a popular evergreen option. The glossy, apple green foliage makes a lush and dense hedge that offers year-round interest and screening. Also known as New Zealand Privet or New Zealand Broadleaf, this is a wonderfully diverse hedging plant suited to coastal situations, as well as inland positions.
Griselinia littoralis hedge plants have lovely, soft, green foliage which is oval-shaped and glossy. Due to its evergreen nature, Griselinia hedging offers year-round privacy screening, whilst providing shelter from noise pollution and winds. This is an ideal choice for seaside locations, as the hardy foliage can tolerate harsh weather conditions. This evergreen hedging also displays small purple fruits in the winter, delivering a tasty treat for birds and giving Griselinia littoralis added wildlife interest.
Griselinia littoralis is perfect for formal hedging as it can be clipped into a fairly compact, neat shape. It also works well when left to develop a more natural form, great for a relaxed aesthetic, as Griselinia hedging is attractive when left a little bushy. Griselinia hedge plants are suited to coastal sites, adding to the popularity of this species. New Zealand Privet can handle most UK climates, apart from those that experience extremely cold temperatures; Oleaster would be a better choice in these conditions.
New Zealand Privet can be combined with the variegated variety of Griselinia littoralis; Dixon's Cream for a brighter look, or grown alone as a classic, feature hedge, that would make an attractive addition to any garden.
With an average growth rate, your Griselinia littoralis hedge will achieve about 30cm of growth a year. The height of Griselinia hedging varies between 1.5m - 6m, and can be controlled with trimming to meet your desired height.
Pruning Griselinia littoralis is fairly simple; we recommend trimming one a year in late autumn. Griselinia hedging can also be hard-pruned should you require a more specific height or shape. Please view our Hedging Care Advice page for further pruning information.
