Spindle hedging plants provide a wonderful array of autumn colour. The four-lobed capsules burst into life with a vibrant shade of pink, opening to reveal orange fruits in autumn. Euonymus europaeus hedging plants have dark green foliage that transforms into rich shades of red and yellow in autumn, adding another layer of colour to your garden. Euonymus europaeus earned its common name from the wool spindles that were made from its strong wood.

Spindle is a relatively fast-growing hedging plant that boasts wonderful autumn colour to really brighten up a winter scene. The fruits which appear in autumn can hang onto the branches well into winter, providing a splash of orange when most other plants are settling down for the cold weather. For optimum fruit production plant in a sunny site however Spindle hedges can withstand partial shade. Although Euonymus europaeus is best suited to a well-drained, moist soil it does cope well in wet soils.
Best uses for Spindle hedging
Spindle hedges produce inconspicuous flowers in May-June that are rich in nectar, attracting pollinating insects and making it a great hedge to include in a wildlife garden. It is important to mention that the leaves and fruit are harmful if eaten, so it is best not to plant in reach of children or pets.
A quick-growing hedge, Spindle will easily achieve at least 40cm growth per year and is ideal for hedging of 1-4m.
