Hazel hedge plants (Corylus avellana) description

The green foliage of Corylus avellana is rounded and slightly hairy with a pointed tip, turning lovely shades of orange and yellow in the autumn before falling. Hazel Corylus avellana produces edible nuts that are popular with wildlife, particularly squirrels, and has attractive, long, yellow catkins that adorn the branches in early spring.

Most popular uses of Hazel hedging

Corylus avellana is suited to cottage gardens and informal hedging. It can be trimmed into a more formal shape if desired, but looks better when left to develop a natural form. Hazel hedge plants grow well in almost any soil type and will tolerate exposed sites, making them a good choice to use as a windbreak or screen.
