Wintergreen Barberry hedge (Berberis julianae) description
Being an evergreen Berberis julianae makes a good screen and provides year-round interest. The long and treacherous thorns make this prickly shrub virtually impenetrable so it is the ideal intruder-proof solution. Berberis julianae, or the Wintergreen Barberry as it is commonly known, offers great ornamental value too; the glossy green foliage creates a wonderful foil to masses of buttercup yellow flowers in the spring, which are quickly followed by bruise-blue fruits. An evergreen, the Chinese Barberry (as it is also sometimes known) boasts red and burnt orange tints to its elongated foliage in the autumn.
Best uses for Wintergreen berberis hedges
Ideal for garden hedging, the Wintergreen Berberis can be left to grow into a naturally bushy form, or trimmed for a neater effect. Berberis julianae is suited to most but the very wettest conditions, even poor soils, coastal and inland exposure, and some drought. The nasty thorns make it an ideal intruder deterrent, whilst the evergreen foliage provides year-round interest.
