Prunus padus, or Bird Cherry as it is commonly known, is a popular addition to a mixed native hedge. However, Bird Cherry hedge plants are also great for a stand-alone hedge or when grown as a hedgerow tree. Prunus padus boasts racemes of almond-scented flowers in spring, followed by black cherries in autumn. The bitter fruits are a favourite with birds who will strip them from the branches in no time!
For maximum fruit production, it is best to plant Bird Cherry in full sun in well-drained, normal soil. We do however recommend avoiding exposed or coastal sites. Prunus padus also provides warm autumn colour, when the green foliage turns a golden yellow.
