Field Maple or Acer campestre hedge plants are a lovely UK native species and the UK’s only native Maple. Field Maple is known for its large lobed, mid-green foliage which turns buttery yellow in autumn just before the winged seeds release. A fast-growing hedging plant, Field Maple is popularly grown in a Native Mix, though looks equally as attractive when grown alone.
Best Features: Buttery yellow autumn colour, wildlife-friendly,
Ideal For Hedges: 1m-4m high
Growth Rate: Fast | 40-60cm a year
Position: Field Maple will flourish in nearly all soils and locations, including chalky soil, partial shade, coastal sites and windy, exposed areas.
A lovely native and hardy plant, Acer campestre has mid-green, five-lobed foliage which is prettily tinged with red in the spring. The seeds, like little helicopters, which develop from the small green flower clusters seen in spring, are closely followed by the stunning golden-yellow of the autumnal foliage which will brighten any garden.
Best uses for Acer campestre
A fast grower, Field Maple is ideal for informal garden hedging, though it can be clipped to shape. Acer campestre is often used in Native mixes to add a splash of autumn colour and being suited to coastal and exposed sites it is a useful and versatile choice. Although deciduous, Acer campestre has fairly dense foliage and can form a good privacy screen when in full leaf. It also provides excellent shelter for local birds and wildlife through spring and summer. Interestingly, as with all other Maples, it is possible to make maple syrup from the sap!
Field Maple is a fast grower and will achieve 40-60cm a year and is ideal for heights of 1-4m.
