Elaeagnus × ebbingei, or Elaeagnus × submacrophylla hedge plants are also known by their common name Oleaster and make for a delightful evergreen hedge. The green foliage of Elaeagnus × ebbingei hedge plants bears small silver spots and silvery-white undersides, creating a silver-green shimmering effect. Oleaster hedges produce highly scented flowers in the autumn and orange berries in the spring, giving unusual seasonal interest, as the flowers and berries normally appear in the reverse order.

  • Best Features: Silvery-green evergreen foliage, spring orange berries, wildlife-friendly, autumn flowers, year-round interest
  • Ideal For Hedges: 1m - 4m high
  • Growth Rate: Fast | 40-60cm a year
  • Position: Any normal or dry soil, full shade to sunny, coastal (very good at the coast) and inland exposure, avoid wet sites.
  • Also Consider: Portuguese Laurel for an evergreen hedge with a slightly different foliage colour to Elaeagnus × ebbingei, or take a look at our coastal hedging plants range for more inspiration.

Oleaster hedge (Elaeagnus × ebbingei hedge plants) description

A spectacular evergreen, Elaeagnus hedging is admired for its fragrant, bell-shaped, small white flowers and orange berries which, unusually, are produced in the spring as opposed to the autumn, against bronze coloured stems. Oleaster hedges have wonderful grey or silvery-green foliage and make a marvellous garden hedge, providing year-round cover and interest to wildlife.

Best uses for Elaeagnus hedging

A useful coastal hedging plant, Oleaster is a hardy variety and will suit all but very cold and wet sites, growing best in a shady spot. An attractive bushy shrub, Elaeagnus × ebbingei makes a great windbreak, noise barrier and quick-growing screen, whilst providing seasonal interest.

Elaeagnus x ebbingei hedge plants

Bought some last year for a different part of the garden and they are knitting together very well,so will soon be able to shape a hedge. The ones this year were smaller pots, but the plants look very healthy and are growing already after just a few weeks.

Elaeagnus x ebbingei hedge plants

Ordered 14 - only received 13 of which 9 were badly damaged, pots broken, one pot missing completely so bare roots exposed probably for the entire journey. Wish I’d bought from a local nursery - it would have meant a longer wait but the plants would have been 100% better.
