A popular ornamental shrub, Viburnum lantana provides seasonal colour and wildlife value whilst also making the perfect, informal hedging screen. Domes of snowy white flowers are produced in spring which turn into red fruits in the autumn, ripening to black. The deeply grooved, velvet foliage is grey-green, turning red in autumn before falling.

*Please note, 1 bare root = 1 Viburnum Lantana plant, not a bundle of plants. We use a mixture of bare root photos taken in leaf from our growing sites in summer, as well as during the bare root planting season when Viburnum Lantana may be defoliated.
Viburnum lantana, commonly known as the Wayfaring Tree as it was often planted along waysides, provides an array of features from spring through to autumn. Plant Viburnum lantana for fragrant flowers, colourful berries and autumn colour. Viburnum lantana is great for wildlife gardens as birds will eat the berries and seek shelter within its branches. The white flowers also produce nectar, yielded by butterflies. The Cotton Tree will grow well in any moist yet well-drained site and is suited to most soil types. The Common Wayfaring Tree will have the best flower display if planted in full sun but will tolerate both partial shade and drought.
This deciduous Viburnum variety is often planted along paths but also makes a great hedging screen for informal boundaries. The dense, upright habit makes this native Viburnum perfect for cottage gardens and relaxed, informal hedging.
This native hedging shrub can be incorporated into a mixed native hedge or hedgerow. It also looks fantastic planted as a stand-alone hedge or ornamental shrub.
Growth rate of Wayfaring Tree hedge plants
Lantana Viburnum is ideal for hedging of up to 5m and will achieve this relatively quickly with an average growth rate of 20-40cm per year.
