Hawthorn hedge plants (Crataegus monogyna) – also known as Quickthorn – is a deciduous native hedge with thorny branches and mid-green lobed leaves. In the spring, Hawthorn produces masses of creamy white, fragranced flowers, followed by shiny, red haws in the autumn months. Hawthorn’s sharp thorns make it both an excellent deterrent for intruders and a wonderful shelter for wildlife.

Hawthorn hedge (Crataegus monogyna) description

The Hawthorn is a very common sight in the English countryside, as this native hedge is great for supporting wildlife, including 150 species of insects, and is an important source of food and shelter for birds and small mammals. During spring, the pretty white blossom that adorns Hawthorn hedging gives off a beautiful, delicate fragrance and is very popular with bees.

Hawthorn is exceptionally hardy, making it an excellent option in exposed locations, including coastal, although it does prefer sunnier positions to shaded.

Hawthorn hedge plants

I ordered 1.5 metre bare root hawthorn hedging plants as our mature hedge had developed some gaps. The plants delevered were excellent with a really good root system and were probably bigger then the 1.5 metres described. Very happy and would recommend Best4 Hedging.
